Matthew Capriotti, PhD
About Me
I am a licensed psychologist in the state of California with 12 years of experience. I earned my PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2015. I completed predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California San Francisco. I am currently a Associate Professor of Psychology at San Jose State University, where I have had the pleasure to work since 2016. Aside from work, I enjoy hiking, going to concerts, cooking, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.
My Approach to Therapy
Therapy can be hard. At its core, therapy calls folks to talk about some of their toughest challenges with a new person (their therapist). I know that my clients are taking a bold and brave step in improving their lives by participating in therapy. I also know that there are many different therapies out there and that it can be hard to find the kind of therapist, and therapy, that are the best fit for you. Based on this understanding, I hold to principles core to my work:
(1) I work from a compassionate, supportive, and person-centered approach. I value that each client feels heard, valued, and supported. My goal is to collaborate with you and join with you to work toward your goals.
(2) I center evidence-based approaches in work with clients. I know that therapy requires time, effort, and vulnerability. I honor this by using evidence-based approaches to care. This means that we will use techniques shown by scientific research to have the best chance of helping you address the issues you are working on. This does not mean that I use a "one-size-fits-all" approach. Rather, we will work together to discover how to apply scientifically-supported principles of change to your unique situation, in the service of your personal goals.
Populations Served
I have experience working with children, adolescents, and adults facing a variety of issues, and I value the opportunity to work with clients moving toward a variety of goals. Some my specific areas of expertise include:
-
Tourette Syndrome and other tic disorders
-
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
-
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
-
Disruptive behavior problems
I draw on a variety of approaches in my work, carefully considering your individual preferences, background, and goals. I lean most heavily on approaches from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). For clients with tic disorders, I provide Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT).
